Parents helping children
to succeed in school is a positive, proactive, and productive way
to minimize stress in the home. Here are ways you can help:
Become an involved
parent. Attend school events and volunteer to assist.
Communicate effectively with school staff and teachers. Get to know
them and support them.
Work out any issues
courteously and productively.
Create a home environment that encourages learning, schoolwork, and
asking questions.
Establish daily
routines and family rules together. Avoid over scheduling. Allow
time to daydream.
Help your child
develop good study skills and homework habits. Promote
responsibility by expecting homework to be completed and turned in
on time.
Allow time for
leisure activities but limit computer time, TV, and video games.
Encourage your child to be active physically and mentally.
Encourage good
health and healthy habits, including nutritious meals and adequate
sleep.
Read to your child;
encourage reading every day. Make it fun.
Set realistic and
attainable goals with your child. Recognize effort, not just
results.
Review your child's
school papers and work brought home. Talk about your child's day by
asking open-ended questions. LISTEN!
Be alert to warning
signs of trouble and take action.
